Before school was out, Mrs. Green's 7th-11th grade classes were able to launch rockets received through the Toshiba America Grant. #ToshibaAmerica. She is very grateful for the excitement her students were able to experience while bringing math to life.
The 7th grade and 9th grades launched rockets with an altimeter attached, which allowed them to determine the maximum height that their rocket launched. They used that data to determine the mean, median, and mode of the heights. The 7th grade also determine the probability of a successful launch and timed their launches so they could calculate the speed of their rockets. The 8th graders tracked the time it took for their rocket's parachute to deploy. They use their data to determine if there was a linear relation and the probability of their rockets landing on the football field. The 9th, 10th, and 11th graders coded a micro:bit to collect digital data. The 9th and 11th graders coded their micro:bit for temperature. The 9th grade had to determine how to attach their micro:bit to the rocket. They used Velcro and rubber bands. That worked, as no micro:bits were lost or damaged and all were able to collect data. The 11th graders launched rockets that had a payload. The micro:bit was put in a tube. After the rocket launched, they uploaded their data to a spreadsheet and used a formula to convert celsius to Fahrenheit. They had to determine the domain and range of their data and determine any outliers. The 10th grade coded their micro:bit for acceleration and also had rockets with a payload. After launching, they uploaded their data to a spreadsheet and used a formula to convert the G force to feet per second.
Some of the rockets were launched up to four times. One rocket was lost. Two were damaged beyond repair. Students had to replace parts and parachutes on a few of the rockets. Overall, students learned problem solving skills. They were very determined to get their rocket to launch. We had several that did not launch on the first attempt. The students quickly figured out the problem. We had a 100% launch rate. The students enjoyed the project and most reported it as their favorite activity on Mrs. Green's reflection survey. The project will continue the project next year.
