Title 1 Reading

In Title 1, we will be working on many things during the year. We will work on phonological awareness, phonics, spelling, vocabaulary, comprehension skills, and strategic reading tools. Becoming a successful reader is like any other skill it takes alot of practice to become a good reader. It is like math, you use it everyday in one way or another.

Helping Kids Succeed in School

Here are some ways parents can help their child succeed:

1. Care about their education.

2. Make reading a family matter.

3. Take interest in your child's thinking.

4. Model learning.

5. Support teachers.

6. Create the space and mood for homework.

7. Be a thoughtful helper.

8. Take notice.

Education takes place over a lifetime, but parents can do much to ensure their children's engagement and success along the way.

Woodward Plains Indian and Pioneer Museum

We will be going on our 1st Field Trip on Tuesday, December 9 to the Woodward Plains Indian and Pioneer Museum. During our tour of the museum, everyone will be taking digital pictures of their favorite historical items. These pictures will be used for our next class assignment. The pictures from their field trip will be downloaded and saved to make a pictorial book about their trip. After touring the museum, we will be going to Pizza Hut for lunch.

Gifted and Talented Class

2nd Semester

We are starting a new unit on the White House and the people who were important to our nation.

White House History

Did you know that the White House was built over 200 years ago?

Did you know that John Adams not George Washington was the first to live in the White House?

Did you know the White House has 132 rooms, 34 bathrooms, 6 levels in the residence, 412 doors, 146 windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, and 3 elevators?

Did you know it takes 570 gallons of paint to cover its outside surface?

The Oval Office

Did you know that:

The office was named for it's distinctive shape and is part of the West Wing of the White House.

It has three large south-facing windows behind the President's desk, as well as four doors into different parts of the West Wing.

The President uses the Oval Office as his primary place of work.

The Vice President's Residence and Office

Did you know that:

It is located on the grounds of the United States Naval Observatory.

Walter Mondale was the 1st Vice-President to use it as his home. Since then Vice-President Bush, Quayle, Gore and Cheyney have used it as their homes. In 2009, Vice-President and Dr. Biden now live there.

Camp David

Did you know that:

Camp David was formally a Naval Support Facility and now is the President's country residence.

Camp David was originally called USS Shangri La but President Eisenhower renamed it in honor of his grandson, David.

Air Force One

Did you know that:

Air Force One is the only plane the President flies in while traveling around the world.

Air Force One has the words "United States of America, the American flag, and the Seal of the President of the United States" emblazoned on it.

It has 4,000 square feet of floor space on three levels, including an extensive suite for the President that features a large office, a lavatory, and conference room. It also has a medical suite that can function as an operation room, and a doctor is permanently on board.  The plane's food preparation galleys can feed 100 people at a time.

Fun Facts about our Presidents

Did you know that:

Thomas Jefferson spoke 6 different languages.

Andrew Jackson was the 1st President to ride in a train.

John Tyler had 15 children.

Ulysses S. Grant was fined $20 for speeding with

his horse and carriage.

Glover Cleveland was the 1st and only President to be

married in the White House.

Harry S. Truman read every book in his town library.

Gerald R. Ford's held his daughter's High School Prom

in the White House.

George H. Bush survived 4 plane crashes during World War 2.

George W. Bush has a collection of over 250 signed baseballs.

Sam Sidder's Studio/Gallery

We went on our 2nd Field Trip to Shattuck to visit Sam Sidders Studio/Gallery. Sam is what I call a very talented man. He does landscapes, watercolor, and two dimensional styles of artwork. He also makes Kaleidoscopes out of a variety of different objects. While there, Sam did a watercolor picture for us. The students had a chance to see him create one from the beginning to the end. After visiting the gallery/studio, our class went and ate at Shattuck's famous restaurant, Ed's Diner.

Oklahoma Aquarium

We went to the Oklahoma Aquarium on Friday, April 24 in Jenks, Oklahoma for our final field trip this year. It had 200 or more exhibits including 10 major galleries with more then 4,000 creatures from our world's waters. We were able to see not only freshwater creatures but saltwater creatures.

They had a new exhibit of otters, beavers, and raccoons. A baby otter was born at the aquarium on September 2008. During our visit the students had the opportunity to feed and feel stringray's, to watch a electric eel and piranha be fed, and so many other unbelieveable things. I highly recommend anyone who can take their family to see this awesome place. We are very fortunate to have this in our state.
